Our Story
The idea for the Yogurt Pump began in the early 1980s. Frozen yogurt was a new concept. A few stores were
popping up in California, but it was virtually unheard of in the state of North Carolina, and the Yogurt Pump
became the state's first frozen yogurt shop in 1982!
Yogurt Pump served local Chapel Hillians and students who fell for its charm, value, and novelty. As other
Franklin Street businesses came and went, "YoPo" (as customers began to call the place) remained an iconic pit
stop for the Chapel Hill community. In 2005, frozen yogurt exploded across the U.S. with trendy self-serve
chains popping up in all 50 states. It was an exciting and frightening time! On one hand, we were thrilled
that frozen yogurt was getting the attention we believed it deserved. On the other, we weren't like all of the
other shops and we didn't want to be. A formerly "cash-only" establishment, we began taking credit cards and
we increased our flavor options. But we also hung tight and trusted the business that had carried us this far.
We served high-quality frozen yogurt at reasonable prices, and our loyal customers did the rest. Decades later
we remain dedicated to serving our local community. We're pretty attached to our old-school '80s décor and
we've come to embrace our quaint style, and remain grateful to the students and locals who keep our dream
alive. As other businesses chase the market, eager to respond to the ephemeral whims of popular culture, our
sights stay close to home, and our quality never quakes. We will continue to serve your yogurt, checking each
cup or cone to ensure the best quality. Chapel Hill is our heart and our pulse, and us "YoPros" hope we make
you proud.
